Freak. That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna's own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma.

When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.
Review: This book was just... meh. It's VERY much like The Iron King and The Iron Daughter, but not as good. The biggest problem this book had was that it was just too short! It easily could have been another 100 pages long, maybe 200!

As it was, I just felt like we were rushing through the story. There was no "breathing time" in between events, and that made the entire book seem really rushed and fake.

Was it bad? No. It's a perfectly fine read. But the hurriedness of the book made it almost... boring. It wasn't edge-of-your-seat speed. It was I-already-know-where-this-is-going-because-you-haven't-thrown-in-any-twists speed.

So all-in-all, a very straightforward book. Simple and nothing original (except the tattoos, which got kind of cool by the end but the book was just too short!), but a good story. I would recommend getting this one from a library. Because even though you probably won't dislike it. I definitely didn't like it well enough to own it.

  1. Bummer. I thought it sounded interesting, and I was quite excited for this one...

I haven't read The Iron King series yet. I wonder if that will change how much I do or don't like it...

  2. Oh, really? I hate those, meh, books. :D Well, good books will come around. I haven't read the series, but I heard they're pretty good. Anyways, great review.

  3. That's sad. I really thought this would be a interesting one.
